First Friday Picks November 2008

new_construction_1430.gif
LEFT: Nick van Woert, RIGHT: Nicholas Pittman

Nick van Woert and Nicholas Pittman are bringing New Construction to Fourteen30. Responding to changes in technology and contemporary life through invention rather than reflection, the artists attempt to create a sense of order out of our times through abstract works of relief construction, sculpture, and painting. It's good to see Fourteen30 bringing this space back to participating in First Friday.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • November 7
Fourteen30 • 1430 SE 3rd AVE • 503.236.1430

Roxanne Jackson, "Shared Devotion"

Gallery Homeland presents Roxanne Jackson's Must Find Truth. Jackson's sculptures employ the "grotesque and macabre" to remove layers of social construction and reveal the emotional truth and balance of the subconscious.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • November 7
Gallery Homeland • 2505 SE 11th • info@galleryhomeland.org

AirNouveau4.jpg

Worksound invites us to come celebrate the "post-election haze" with Air Nouveau!. Featured work includes video-lights intervention by Horia Boboia, painting and video painting by Andrea Fellers and Darcy Bartoletti, and abstract Western landscapes by Sophie De Lignerolles. The artist reception will be followed at 9pm by the musical stylings of Kelvin Pittman.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • November 7
Worksound • 820 SE Alder • mojomodou@gmail.com

Nathan-Gibson-dismount.jpg

Jáce Gáce's own Nathan Gibson will exhibit Dis Mount, "a series of explorations questioning the shape of content by reinvigorating formalistic notions of figure and ground... what is more important, the content or the shape of the content?"

Opening reception • 6-9pm • November 7
Jáce Gáce • 2045 SE Belmont • 503.239.1887

Mann.jpg
John Mann

Newspace presents a fairly disparate exhibition of photographs by the top three picks from their 2007 National Juried Exhibition. John Mann's Folded in Place is an exploration of place through the visualization of maps; Alex Emmons presents work informed by her investigation of the intersection of domestic space and the agencies of displacement; and Takako Kido presents images inspired by the peace and natural beauty of Japan's coast.

Opening reception • 7-10pm • November 7
Newspace Center for Photography • 1632 SE 10th AVE • 503.963.1935
