First Thursday Picks January 2008

Hap Tivey at Elizabeth Leach
Hap Tivey, "Sand Grain"

This month, Hap Tivey's Sands of the Ganges opens at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery. Created with canvas, acrylic, and LEDs, these light sculptures are a gorgeous antidote to the dark Northwest winter. The show derives its title from a Sanskrit metaphor for infinity, and each work explores theoretical concepts just this side of abstraction, such as a proton or the wavelength of speech.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • January 3
Elizabeth Leach Gallery • 417 NW 9th AVE • 503.224.0521

Macca at PDX Contemporary
Joe Macca, "Untitled"

Joe Macca's slowblivion is on exhibition this month at PDX Contemporary. Although Macca's vivid color fields and simple shapes seem entrenched in abstraction, Macca asks us to see color as "the primary representational tool." His works use color to express private memory and homage.

Opening reception • 6-8pm • January 3
PDX Contemporary Art • 925 NW Flanders • 503.222.0063

Carrie Iverson at Bullseye
Carrie Iverson, "Catalyst (Scythes)"

Through February, Bullseye Gallery will be showing Carrie Iverson's Catalyst. The installation contrasts prints on paper with prints in fused glass to create elegant and other-wordly images.

Opening reception • 5:30-7:30pm • January 3
Artist reception • 5:30-7:30pm • Febuary 6
Bullseye Gallery • 300 NW 13th AVE • 503.227.0222

Lorna Nakell at Beppu Wiarda
Lorna Nakell, "Monet Crosses the River Styx"

Lorna Nakell's Monet Crosses the River Styx is on display in the back room of Beppu Wiarda this month. The enormous mural is part of a series by Nakell that explores the intersection of poetics and famous painters. Her technique draws from 1950s abstract expressionism.

Opening reception • 5-8pm • January 3
Beppu Wiarda Gallery • 319 NW 9th AVE • 503.241.6260

Kirkpatrick at Chambers
Heidi Kirkpatrick, "Penmanship"

Continuing this month at Chambers is Heidi Kirkpatrick's Lost and Found. Kirkpatrick's work knits together object and medium to create a series of beautiful and often haunting images that resonate with the strange sensation of finding oneself lost.

Opening reception • 5:30-8:30pm • January 3
Chambers Fine Art • 207 SW Pine St. #102 • 503.227.9398

Rake Invitational
From the Rake Invitational

For the month of January, Rake Art will be exhibiting a group invitational. Hand selected by the Rake staff, the show features a variety of paintings, photography, and drawing by Thornton C. Wilson (Colorado), Mark Gleason (California), Cathie Vacca (Oregon), Jacquelyn Bond (Oregon), Gary Hood (Oregon), Aaron Schlosberg (Georgia).

Opening reception • 6-9:30pm • January 3
Rake Art Gallery • 325 NW 6th AVE • 503.914.6391

Gregg Renfrow's great color fields are showing at Liz Leach this month as well. This should be a good month for "light & color enthusiasts" at Liz.
