First Thursday Picks April 2009

TerryToedtemeierBlueSky.jpg
Terry Toedtemeier

In April, Blue Sky is featuring Early Work by the late Terry Toedtemeier. This body of work comes from around 1975, when he co-founded Blue Sky. In the midst of a "brief, intense investigation of the possibilities of infrared photography," Toedtemeier was still interested in capturing gestures and the human, or sometimes animal, figure. This subject distinguishes these images from his later work, when he turned primarily to landscape. Blue Sky will also be exhibiting shows by Alexis Pike and Andy Freeberg, as well as select images by Abelardo Morell, who is in town as keynote speaker for the upcoming Photolucida conference.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • April 2
Blue Sky Gallery • 122 NW 8th • 503.225.0210

Linda Hutchins, "Hammerhead, Cup, Egg"

Pulliam Deffenbaugh presents Classics, a group exhibition of gallery artists, featuring Linda Hutchins, Jeffry Mitchell, Laurie Reid, Heather Larkin Timken, and more. This is an important show of core strengths for the gallery as it seeks to resettle itself and adjust to the slowing art market.

Opening reception • 5:30-8pm • April 2
Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery • 929 NW Flanders • 503.228.6665

Jim Neidhardt, "Persona non grata"

Founded in April 1979, Blackfish is one of Portland's - and the U.S.'s - oldest and most successful cooperative galleries. They will be celebrating their 30th anniversary this month with an exhibition of work by current members.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • April 2
Blackfish Gallery • 503.224.2634

Christopher Rauschenberg, "Barcelona, Spain"

Elizabeth Leach presents an exhibition of photographs by Christopher Rauschenberg, founding member of the non-profit Blue Sky Gallery. Wanderings II presents images from Rauschenberg's recent travels to Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the southwestern United States.

Opening reception • April 2 • 6-9pm
Elizabeth Leach Gallery • 417 NW 9th • 503.224.0521

CL-Pill.jpg
Cyntha Lahti, "Pill"

Cynthia Lahti will be exhibiting new sculptures and drawings this month at PDX Contemporary. Lahti writes: "The works in Smile were done under the disguise of experimentation of surface treatments on clay body. They are heavy in their reference to history and criminal in their ruthless theft of it. There are so many figures out there in the world, in so many poses, wearing costumes, I find the ones that resonate. They come out of the kiln with the weight of evidence of an idea as their fate."

Opening reception • 5:30-8pm • April 2
PDX Contemporary Art • 925 NW Flanders • 503.222.0063

stotik-bear_skeletons.jpg
Eric Stotik, "Untitled (bear/skeletons)"

Laura Russo is exhibiting recent paintings by Eric Stotik: "His small, delicate narratives depict unusual worlds. Incorporating dreamlike figures and scapes that warrant further investigation, they elicit a darker side of the psyche."

Opening reception • 5-8pm • April 2
Laura Russo Gallery • 805 NW 21st • 503.226.2754

cunningham-self.jpg
Imogen Cunningham, "Self-Portrait," 1906

The Guestroom Gallery presents Figures in the Landscape, an exhibition of photography by Northwest luminaries, curated by Jennifer Stoots. Works span the 20th century, exploring the themes of landscape and the body. Featured Oregon and Washington-born artists include Imogen Cunningham, Terry Toedtemeier, Lee Friedlander, and Al Monner. Other featured artists who lived and worked in the Northwest include Edward S. Curtis, Ray Atkeson, Minor White, Robert Adams and Stu Levy.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • April 2
