First Thursday Picks August 2008

Bobby Grossman, "Andy Warhol: Cornflakes," 1978

Traveling exhibition Bande à part (Band of Outsiders) is coming to Augen Gallery NW this month. A reference to the 1964 film by Jean-Luc Godard, the show is a collection of photographs from the New York underground scene in the 60's, 70's, & 80's. It is an "inside" look at the self-proclaimed "outsiders," including photography by Billy Name, Danny Fields, Leee Black Childers, Anton Perich, Roberta Bayley, Godlis, Marcia Resnick, and Bobby Grossman. This show is timed nicely with the Famous Faces exhibition at the Maryhill Museum.

Opening reception • 5-8:30pm • August 7
Augen Gallery NW • 716 NW Davis • 503.546.5056

Robert Yoder, "Grand"

Moving even further back in time, Robert Yoder presents "a richly humorous take on the art movement of the late 1950s" with Action Painting!. He presents his vinyl and graphite works on paper as paintings, playfully subverting "their inherent physical qualities." The original Action Painters used chaotic brushstrokes to present the appearance of action and violence; Yoder toys with this idea in his collages by making abstract references to "dangerous events," from avalanches to bad music.

Opening reception • 5-8pm • August 7
Froelick Gallery • 714 NW Davis St. • 503.222.1142

Bryan Schellinger, from "Chi-Shifters"

Bryan Schellinger is exhibiting his second solo show at Quality Pictures this month. Chi-Shifters & recent works on paper explores his latest work on paper, focusing on his most recent series. The "Chi-Shifters" furthers Schellinger's striped paintings and their exploration of abstraction and representation. Beginning with landscape and architectural imagery, he breaks the images down to their elemental shapes, layering and combining them to create the "Chi-Shifters." His 2007 exhibition of striped paintings was extraordinary, but muted- come see where Schellinger can take this theme in living color.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • August 7
Quality Pictures Contemporary Art • 916 NW Hoyt • 503.227.3060

Stuart Cornell, "Composition 77"

Stuart Cornell's New Paintings is the fruit of two decades of analysis of the modern American city. His "contemporary urban abstractions" explore the extent to which the modern city has shaped and transformed our lives and our planet.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • August 7
Mark Woolley • 817 SW 2nd AVE • 503.224.5475

Eadweard Muybridge, "Animal Locomotion (Plate 163)," 1887

Photography enthusiasts should not miss the Eadweard Muybridge show at Hartman. They're exhibiting his 1887 Collotype series Animal Locomotion, "arguably one of the most important bodies of work in the history of photography." It's a fantastic opportunity to experience historically significant explorations into both the nature of photography, and its ability to improve our understanding of the world around us.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • August 7
Charles A. Hartman Fine Art • 134 NW 8th AVE • 503.287.2886

Nicole Charles

City Hall is exhibiting work by several talented local photographers, including Christopher Rauschenberg, Nicole Charles, Ann Ploeger, Richard Schemmerer, and many, many more.

Opening reception • 5-7pm • August 7
City Hall • 1221 SW 4th AVE

Don't forget to check out the oxymoronic cold encaustic paintings by Kelly McCarty at the Pearl District US Bank branch, located at NW 11th and Lovejoy. Mr. McCarty shows at coffee shops and financial institutions throughout the Northwest.

There will also be encaustics by Carolina Medina-Dupaix across the river. It's not First Thursday territory, but she's having an opening for her encaustic works at Vino Vixens, an east side wine bar, open late.
