Embroidery and the Prairie

Maggy Rozycki Hiltner

The Contemporary Crafts Museum and Gallery has a great show opening this week. New Embroidery: Not Your Grandma's Doily boasts an impressive roster of artists including a personal fav, the crafty and conceptual Hildur Bjarnadóttir. Co-curated by Annin Barrett, Manya Shapiro, and Namita Gupta Wiggers, the exhibition "explores contemporary approaches to embroidery, revealing surprising, humorous, even subversive imagery executed in thread upon vintage fabrics." To add to the excitement, there will be a panel discussion hosted by the Pacific NW College of Art featuring New Embroidery artists Lou Cabeen, Dana Fenwick, Maggy Rozycki Hiltner, Wendy Huhn, Roberta Lavadour and Andrea Vander Kooij. With a practice that blurs the boundaries of scientific investigation and fine art photography, visual artist Terry Evans will talk about her interest in the interconnectedness of the prairie ecosystem and how each biological and botanical specimen contributes to the whole of the environment. Her works are currently on view at the college’s Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art in an exhibit titled “Artists and Specimens: Documenting Contemporary Experience.”
