First Weekend Picks May 2011

The YU Contemporary Art Center presents its inaugural exhibition, Selections From the PCVA Archive. The show will "revisit and honor the legacy of the PCVA and look into a vibrant and important moment in the history of contemporary art in Portland, providing historical context for YU and inspiring a forward-looking vision for a world-class contemporary art center in the city." The show will also launch the YU library and its first publication, Veneer Magazine 08/18.

Paulus Kapteyn

Nationale presents Paulus Kapteyn's The Pursuit of Happiness, in which the artist "assumes the role of a modern muckraker in order to investigate the lurking repercussions of unchecked corruption. Utilizing a playful aesthetic to delineate his subjects' subversive, oſten menacing, postures, Kapteyn reveals a sinister correlation between political upheaval and social perversion."

Ditch Projects presents Ruth Lantz's Let's Get Together, the second installation in the ongoing On&On&On, "an ever-changing gallery show instigated by MK Guth." The project is ongoing through May 28 with a different opening each weekend.

Maureen Drennan

Newspace presents Fringe Economies, work by Sarina Finkelstein and Maureen Drennan. Finkelstein is showing images from her series The New 49ers, which explores the resurgence of gold prospecting in California. Drennan is showing images from her series Meet Me in the Green Glen, which documents the life of a marijuana farmer in California.
