First Thursday Picks June 2010

lake-target46.jpg
Eva Lake, "Target 46"

Augen DeSoto presents Eva Lake's Targets. Inspired by the nostalgia craze of Hollywood glamor, Lake's "Babes in the Target" are a conversation about "what a woman artist's life [is] like - she makes objects but she's also the object. The conversation is as much about her, her body, how she looks and how sexy she is - as it is her work."

Opening reception • 5-8:30pm • June 3
Augen Gallery • 716 NW Davis • 503.503.546.5056

Storm_2010_sm.jpg
Storm Tharp at PDX Contemporary

PDX Contemporary presents Storm Tharp's Hercules, a series of drawings that "reflect a desire to observe philosophy and to encounter perfection - to be enlightened. The maximal and decorated inclinations are in question. The labor and the effort are being weighed. Representation is scrutinized and the desire to explore the formlessness of abstraction is pursued."

Opening reception • 6-8pm • June 3
PDX Contemporary Art • 925 NW Flanders • 503.222.0063

Wid-Flight.jpg
Wid B. Vicious, "Flight," installed at Chambers@916

Chambers@916 presents Wid B. Vicious works the room. Featuring two wall-size installations, "organic shapes and sweeping curves cover the walls, seeming to force their way through the floor and ceiling - a painting that wants to become a sculpture, framed for a moment, but not contained." (Full disclosure: This blogger works at Chambers@916.) This is the second month of the exhibition, featuring the unveiling of Flight on the west wall.

Artist reception • 6-9pm • June 3
Chambers@916 • 916 NW Flanders • 503.227.9398

adkins-romance-installed.jpg
Brad Adkins, from "Romance," installed at Pulliam

PDX Across the Hall (at Pulliam) presents Brad Adkins's Romance, featuring large-scale sculptures and text-based works in both neon and vinyl. "Influenced by the Conceptual and Minimal art of the 1970s, Adkins imbues the vernacular with a sense of whimsy and allure, lending an off-kilter aura to the objects we most often perceive as banal."

Opening reception • 6-8pm • June 3
PDX Across the Hall @ Pulliam • 929 NW Flanders • 503.222.0063

popcoochie.jpg

For their final show, IGLOO presents Pop Coochie: "Maybe I'm just saying we're all corrupted in a way; life itself is corrupted, and that's the way we like it." -Maurizio Cattelan Don't miss the last show from this awesome gallery!!

Opening reception • 6-10pm • June 3
IGLOO • 625 NW Everett #102 • iglooarts@gmail.com
