First Friday Picks June 2010

Winters-After.jpg
Bailey Winters, "After the Explosion..."

NAAU presents Bailey Winters' Ambush: The Story of the TDA. The exhibition "depicts a fictionalized revolutionary group living on the West Coast of the United States in the early years of the twenty-first century. Winters' paintings, and their accompanying narrative titles, explore the personal dynamics at work in the underground political party. In particular, Winters examines the organization's final decision to refuse a non-violent alternative and instead continue with militant reaction."

Opening reception • 6-9pm • June 4
New American Art Union • 922 SE Ankeny • 503.231.8294

cadence.jpg

Worksound presents Cadence, directed by Victor Maldonado. The group show, which includes sculpture, video, installation, and performance, explores "the phenomenology of sound and music as hubs for culture." See artist list on the postcard above. Opening and closing receptions will feature different sets of performances.

Opening reception • 7pm • June 4
Closing reception • 7pm • June 25
Worksound • 820 SE Alder • mojomodou@gmail.com

not-so-bright-please.jpg
Daren Wilson

Nationale presents No One & Everyone: (Not) So Bright Please: "Celebrating both the energizing sensory effect of bright colors and the calming simplicity of raw materials, NATIONALE invited several artists to participate in a month long collaboration of what we hope will be the burial of a dark and overly intellectual winter." There will be a minimal set up on view for First Friday, after which the following artists will have a week to experiment with the provided materials, some with the help and participation of the public: Marty Snap, Rikki Rothenberg, Jason Rens, David Neevel, Christy Lutz, Chelsea Heffner, May Juliette Barruel, and Emily Baker. Materials will be provided by Anna Weber, Clara Seasholtz, Eliza Fernand, and Carson Ellis. The closing reception will feature the presentation of their final projects.

Opening reception • 8pm • June 4
Closing reception • 8pm • June 25
Nationale • 811 E Burnside Suite 112 • nationale.portland@gmail.com

fullerton.jpg
Teri Fullerton

Newspace presents Teri Fullerton's Falling in Love at the End of the Universe. Fullerton's work work focuses on the family members of soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq in an attempt to make peace with the heightened sense of fear and anxiety Fullerton felt during her brother's two tours of duty. "She intends the photographs to serve as a vehicle to illuminate shared stories of loss, separation, and hope. Her subjects stand in as witnesses of what has been lost, what has been endured, and what is still happening in the mid-east today."

Opening reception • 6-9pm • June 4
Newspace Center for Photography • 1632 SE 10th • 503.963.1935

Owens-Strange-Attractor.jpg
Jascha Owens, "Strange Attractor"

Launch Pad presents PORTstar Jascha Owens' Paper Trails: "This group of works reflects conversations between explorations of mine in different mediums, with specific emphasis on collage, drawing, and painting. The most current pieces inherently respond to the constraints of collage, though they are not bound to its physical limitations. It is their lineage rather, that confines them to the methodology of marking with assembled parts."

Opening reception • 6pm-midnight • June 4
Launch Pad Gallery • 534 SE Oak • 971.227.0072
