First Friday Picks February 2009

Worksound presents White Noise, a group exhibition on stagnation. Inspired by Portland snow and the struggling economy, 23 artists from the Pacific Northwest & Los Angeles have interpreted this broad theme through video, installation, and other multimedia works. Featured artists include Kevin Abell, Jaclyn Campanaro, Thor Drake, E*Rock, Danridge Geiger, Damien Gilley, Evan B. Harris, Danielle Higgins, Yoni Kifle, Sarah Jane McKinley, Sarah Meadows, Tamar Monhait, Mason Poole (LA), Nick Raffel, Noah and Nathan Rice, Kent Richardson, Rebecca Shelly, Stephen Scott Smith, Corey Smith (LA), Rebecca Steele, Aaron Thomas (LA), and Dylan Walker.

Susan Bein, "Lenin"

Newspace presents its 2009 themed exhibition, Flora & Fauna. Curated by director Laura Valenti, the show "celebrates the beauty and mystery of the plants and animals we share our lives with." 26 artists are featured in this year's show, with First, Second, and Third Place awards offered, as well as a Gallery Goer's award.

Mark Tompkins, "Round and Round"

Mark Tompkins will be exhibiting Dialogues at 23 Sandy. Redefining the classic Cubist challenge of representing multiple perspectives in one composition through photography, Tompkins combines bent space and text to explore "the mystery and irony of the strong story lines that scribe through our lives."

Danielle Levitt

Danielle Levitt is exhibiting We Are Experienced at Nemo Design. A professional pop culture photographer, Levitt began photographing American youth culture during her commercial tours. The photographs on view are from her book of the same title, which collects images of "adolescents in a variety of urban, suburban, and rural settings, as individuals and in groups, loaded with signifiers both mainstream and marginal." The opening includes a book signing and guest performances.

Lori Triburgo's Transportraits will be at Pushdot this month. This series of large portraits of transgendered men re-examines identity and representation in light of the growing movement of the transgendered community.

Starring local artists Carson Ellis avid Wien, Betsy Walton, Ryan Jacob Smith, Ryan Berkley, Emily Counts, Theo Ellsworth, Yellena James, and Scrappers.

Levitt and Triburgo seem pretty cool. The transgender portrait is fascinating. As for Tompkins, I'm really over arty shots of spiral stairwells. : (
