First Friday Picks September 2008

Kazanjian.jpg
Jim Kazanjian

Jim Kazanjian's Untitled works seek to produce an "entropic" series of images. Fragmenting photographic space, Kazanjian attempts to break down the "linear" visual plane, and create something entirely new in its reconstruction.

Opening reception • 6-9pm • September 5
Pushdot Studio • 1021 SE Caruthers St. • 503.224.5925

Maro Vandarou

This September, Newspace is ushering in autumn with a pair of ethereal exhibitions, both using older photographic techniques to bring out nostalgic tonalities. Maro Vandarou's Fragmented Light uses Platinotypes to create haunting images of the ancient Keramicos cemetery near her birthplace in Athens, Greece. In Leafsmoke, Kay Denton presents a series of sun contact-printed and gold toned images taken with vintage lenses that convey a surreal elegance.

Opening reception • 7-10pm • September 5
Vandarou Artist Talk • 12-3:30pm • September 13
Newspace Center for Photography • 1632 SE 10th AVE • 503.963.1935

Continuing: If you missed their openings, take the opportunity to check out these major continuing CEAD shows.
