Congratulations Michael Patterson-Carver

Bush visits Portland, 2007

Congratulations to Portlander Michael Patterson-Carver who is one of the recipients of the 2008 Altoids art prize, he gets 25,000 and a joint show at the New Museum. Previous recipient Harrell Fletcher was one of the *nominators. The award is somewhat unique in contemporary art as artists select other artists for the award, hence the reason the award doesn't have the musty and necrotic smell that most art world prizes have... that and Altoids sponsors it. Carver is represented by Small A where you can see more of his work.

It seems a bit weird (maybe a conflict of interest) that Harrell Fletcher got to choose Carver as the winner, considering Harrell had a lot to do with Carver's recent "success." However, I think it is fantastic. I am always ecstatic about a Portland artist getting this type of recognition.

Just to clarify, Harrell nominated Michael for the award (there were 10 nominators), but the jurying was done by Cindy Sherman, Paul McCarthy and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

Aww, now that makes more sense. And that makes for a pretty great panel of artists to choose Carver.

Great clarification... thanks Laurel
